7 Questions to find life direction

Updated: Apr 21, 2020

Have you ever thought of interviewing YOURSELF? Well, it is actually very helpful. Jordan Peterson (Canadian Psychologist) tells about his "magic pen." Basically, he just took a pen, and asked it questions and had it write the answers to him. He was amazed at the wisdom in that little pen!

The pen, honestly, wasn't the magic. It was Jordan's own brain. Or his intuition. Whatever you want to call it. Byron Katie, an well-known coach, also teaches this in her methods of self-inquiry where she has you ask yourself what you need, what you want, what you believe. Marsha Linehan's DBT concept of "wise mind" is the same thing again. Its that lovely intersection between what you impulsively feel, and what you logically think: it is the true knowing what you know. It is wisdom.

So let your wisdom speak to you. You know way more than you think. Julie Broad offers the following 7 questions to spark your thinking. I suggest you take 30-60 minutes, a notebook and pen (no electronics please.... you'll just end up on Wikipedia the whole time, or worse...), and go to a quiet place and ask yourself these questions. Then write down what you have to say.

1. One year from today, what would you like your ideal day to be like? (what kind of activities, work, emotions, relationships?)

2. Why am I not there now and what have I not done to get there? (pay off debt, learn to be patient?)

3. What am I assuming that I will need to do or have? (a college degree, a new home...?)

4. What sacrifices will you need to make to get there? (get up earlier, eat better, etc)

5. What activity/skill do I need to excel at to achieve my goal? (great communication, self discipline, etc)

6. How can I track my progress? (Chart, journal, calendar, accountability buddy)

7. If my friend asked advice on this same goal, what would I say? (Listen to your wisdom; you don't always need someone to tell you what you already know)

Grand Cardone has said that "your success depends on your ability to increase your efforts, not your excuses." So. True.

Therefore, have a lovely talk with yourself, and then better yet, listen to what you have to say and take some action!
